Brief Biography

Currently I am focusing on finishing my PhD thesis for submission. During my PhD I have worked with Margot Brereton and Andrew Dekker to develop a digital community noticeboard called Nnub. This has been in use in the Brisbane suburb of Moggill from 2008 and at the State Library of Queensland in the Family History section from early 2010. There is an increasing interest in Nnub from people that work on the ground in local communities. Prior to PhD research, I completed a Masters degree in Interaction Design and a Bachelor of Design Studies (Architecture) at the University of Queensland (UQ), and certification as a Cisco Certified Network Associate. I taught at UQ for a number of years both as a tutor and associate lecturer primarily in first year courses for studio based design, visual thinking, and multimedia applications training.
PhD Thesis Title and Abstract
Designing for Local Suburban Communications
The aim of my research is to explore networked technologies for suburban communications, to build a reliable place for people to contact their local community, and to further understand design methods for this purpose. Earlier studies in the suburb in which this research is situated revealed that it is difficult for community members to get messages to their local community. This research uses an exploratory prototype to focus an iterative design cycle, with an embedded approach to understand the community fabric of people and place. The intended contribution is to build knowledge of design for networked technologies for suburban communications.
